15 Month Stats

Ruby turned 15 months old a week ago.  I haven't been posting monthly stats on her since she turned a year old, but I thought this was a good time to share about her growth.

This is such an interesting period in her life and development.  Ruby is still such a little peanut and baby (well, in my eyes, anyway), but is becoming so independent, with the personality to match.  She can understand simple directions and is oftentimes able to communicate her needs to us.  Ruby is usually pretty happy, playful, and can be silly.  She does have her moments where she tests us and doesn't get her way, so we are working on helping her through those moments.

15 Months Old:
Weight: 18.6 pounds
Length: 29.75 inches
Head Circumference: 18.5 inches

Ruby can...
- eat solids cut up into pieces, such as avocado, sweet potato, cheese, bread, pizza, applesauce, rice, noodles, bananas, yogurt, Cheerios

- walk, run (a little - there's usually some falling involved), push things, dance (she LOVES to dance)
- pick out favorite toys and books

- give high five, hug, kiss (sometimes, usually only her animals & dolls), sign a couple of words, point (with her whole hand), pick up small objects, carry things, empty and fill containers, clap

- brush her teeth (with help) - she has 8 teeth in front (4 on top, 4 on the bottom), with two sets of premolars coming in
- throw a mean temper tantrum, which involves falling on the floor and much arm and leg flailing

- drink out of a sippy cup, use a fork or spoon when handed to her

- point to pictures in books, turn pages

- follow simple oral directions
- say "mom" "dad" and "gog" (dog), she's currently working on the word "baby"

Favorites:
Food: Avocado or Cheese
Color: no preference
Hobbies: dancing, feeding the dogs, and playing with mom or dad
Book: How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs? by Jane Yolan
Song: Anything that has a beat
Toy: "Baby" (doll) or Violet (stuffed dog by VTech)

Working on...
- saying more words
- eating more types of fruits and veggies
- petting the dogs gently
- identifying body parts
- stacking toys
- using crayons, not eating them

Dedicated!

Today was a beautiful day for our little family.  We stood in front of our church family and dedicated Ruby to the Lord.  We vowed to raise her in a Christian home and accept the responsibilities that the Lord has placed on us in make us parents of His gift (Ruby).  We also prayed that some day she might accept Christ as her Lord and Savior.  It was a very emotional moment, but with all that emotion, Ruby was still able to hold is together and didn't cry at all!  She was even content when Pastor Brent held her.  We were so very proud.

It was a pretty simple process.  We met with the Pastor last week to review the specifics regarding a baby dedication.  Today, he asked us a few questions in front of the church and then asked the members of the church if they will help us in raising Ruby in the faith.  Finally, he took Ruby, anointed her with oil and prayed.  Simple, but lovely.

Her thumb was in her mouth the entire time.  She also kept her little bow in her hair which made this mama happy (no looking like a little boy!).  Her dress had little dogs all over it, which seemed appropriate for her.

Isn't the photo in the background super cute?  Jess took it during our recent trip to Colorado.

Ruby received some really nice gifts: a certificate, child's Bible, and a Golden book from her babysitter.  I wish our family and her Godparents could have been there, but we are very, very thankful that our church family was present, especially our Care Group friends and her babysitter, who plays a large role in her life.

A happy day for the Hammers!  We love you, Ruby (even when you don't smile for the camera).  You truly are a gift from God.

Colorado Through Instagram

I traveled with Ruby to Colorado this past weekend for a quick visit to see Jess and Brady.  Since I've been really into Instagram lately, I thought it was only appropriate to share the photos from this trip through that lens.

These are in no particular order....we start with Mr. Mustache out for a walk....

Hanging out in jammies...Brady loves jumping in his jumperoo.

He's a helper!  Brady was helping me with some early morning  Pinterest searches.

High five!

Ruby's ready for her walk in Brady's BOB stroller.  She loved the teething toy and dog blanket, although it was a constant battle to keep that hat on her head.  She's only 14 months and already a diva.

Books are the best!  Both babies like stories and interacting with book pages.

Bath time was finally an enjoyable experience for Ruby.  She normally cries the entire time.  Brady seemed to make it really fun and had some really great bath toys.

Jess with her big boy.  Brady and Ruby weigh the same, but there's about 6 months between them.  We've decided he's just a muscle man.

We had a girls' night out (mmmmm...tapas...yum!) and loved every moment of it.  Moms have to get some time off too!

The kiddos hanging out on the floor.  Looks like they are plotting something.

Ruby signed "more" for the first time!

Brady is actively teething.  EVERYTHING went into his little mouth.  Poor guy just needs to sprout some of those pearly whites!

We enjoyed some of this homemade deliciousness one night.  Jess' babysitter is not only good with kids, but even better at baking.

Unfortunately, poor Rubes caught a cold and did not enjoy the flight home.

Finally....the fabulous four!

Better

Nothing makes a day better than an armload of kittens.  Yeah, sometimes my job rocks.

Weekend Whidbey Trip

One of my new year's resolution is to explore more areas of Washington state this year.  We got off to a good start by visiting friends up on Whidbey Island this past weekend.  Amy and Daniel (and baby Ben) moved to Whidbey last summer and we finally got around to taking the short trip up to the island.  After driving off the ferry, I couldn't help by exclaim over and over, "wow, it's so beautiful here!" (I'm sure Noa appreciated the broken record I became on the drive to their house).  The sun was setting and the clouds were all purples and pinks over the water and the mountains.  It looked like a scene from a watercolor painting. I. loved. it.

Upon our arrival, we knew that Ruby would need to stretch her legs, get a bite to eat, and play with her friend, Ben.  The kiddos are about 4 months apart and immediately got along (well, as much as babies can get along).  It's fun to see them interact by head-butting, throwing toys, and making obnoxiously high-pitched shrieking noises.

One of the first things on the agenda the next morning was eating at Knead and Feed, a local breakfast join in Coupeville.

This tiny little restaurant is the quintessential small-town eatery.  There were probably six tables total, a small bakery case at the entrance, and the kitchen right behind that.  It was tiny, but warm and bustling.  We only got a table because we made a reservation.  The food was hearty - huge pancakes and egg scrambles that filled the plate, individual pastries that could be shared between four people, and lots of coffee to go around.  It was a perfect way to be introduced to life on Whidbey.

Here's our fun little group:

Me, Ruby, and Noa....we're smiling because we are stuffed!

Daniel, Amy, and baby Ben!

Ruby was a doll during the meal and ate like a champ.  She's a big fan of the blueberry pancakes!

Whidbey Island is also VERY dog friendly.  There was no shortage of dog sightings and I loved spotting them and meeting some of the island's canines.  This one, Yeti, was my favorite.  I'm thinking we may need an old English sheepdog in our future.

Dogs waiting in the car:

Afterwards we headed to Deception Pass.  This is when I realized that my fear of heights has not diminished with age.  Walking across the bridge was terrifying.  The bridge is about 180 feet up from the water.  Yikes.

I found a map online that shows where Deception Pass (and Whidbey Island) are located in Washington (Seattle is south, also marked on the map with a star).  As you can see, the pass is a really narrow straight between Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island.  From reading a few guidebooks, it sounds like the early explorers to this area initially missed this passage and thus "deceived" into thinking that the island was a peninsula.

I might be smiling, but I was NERVOUS walking over that thing.  It's a good thing the sights were beautiful or I totally would have wimped out.  Noa was good about giving me an encouraging squeeze.

I didn't look down.  I had to look OUT.  The views were awesome and we were so fortunate to get a clear day since it's typically cloudy and rainy this time of year.

It also happened to be freezing that day and we didn't really pack super warm clothing.  Lucky for us, I had a extra hat in the car for Ruby, some sunglasses and a blanket.  We gave her Noa's gloves soon after this picture was taken and she seemed to stay pretty toasty during the excursion.  Ruby was also the spitting image of her father.

For a bridge that was built in the 1930s, it still looks solid and fascinating today.

The two munchkins didn't seem as impressed as the rest of us, but at least they stayed warm.

They were also easy to pose with since we could just keep them tucked into the strollers.  This picture makes me think that Ruby is saying, "look!  I've got giant hands!"

As you can see, Ben was a little less enthusiastic about the photos than his mom or dad.  I think he was hoping that more toys were involved in this adventure.

The rest of our time together was spent hanging out with the kids, enjoying football games, visiting some shops around town, and working on a 5,000 piece puzzle (yes, you read that right...our friends are insane....I mean, dedicated, puzzlers!).

The best part about hanging out together was watching the kiddos interact.  One of their favorite things to do was to play by the baby gate.  They kept giggling, laughing, and making the best faces for an impromptu photo shoot.

"See, Ben, it's easy.  You just lift this up and..."

"Isn't this great?!  The parents are stuck on the other side! We even get the dogs with us!"

"Hey, mom, why don't you put that camera down and let us out, huh?"

Can't wait for more adventures on Whidbey!  And next time, I'll remember to bring my camera.  These photos are all courtesy of Amy (thanks, again Amy!).
